Step-by-step guide to registering for GST

Here’s a step-by-step guide to registering for GST in India:

  1. Visit the GST Portal: Go to the GST portal at www.gst.gov.in.
  2. Navigate to the Registration Page: On the GST portal homepage, click on the “Services” tab and then select “Registration” > “New Registration”.
  3. Fill Part-A of the Registration Form (GST REG-01):
    • Enter your details such as the legal name of the business, PAN of the business, email address, and mobile number.
    • Click on “Proceed” after entering the details.
  4. OTP Verification:
    • You will receive an OTP (One Time Password) on your mobile number and email address. Enter the OTP to verify.
  5. Part-B of the Registration Form:
    • After OTP verification, you will receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN). Use this TRN to fill out Part-B of the registration form (GST REG-01).
    • Log in to the GST portal again and click on “Services” > “Registration” > “New Registration”. This time, select “Temporary Reference Number (TRN)”.
    • Enter the TRN and captcha code, then click on “Proceed”.
  6. Complete the Registration Form:
    • Fill out Part-B of the registration form with details such as business address, bank account details, business activities, and additional information.
    • Upload the required documents, including proof of business registration, identity and address proof of the proprietor/partners/directors, and bank account details.
    • You may also need to upload a photograph of the proprietor/partners/directors.
    • Click on “Save and Continue”.
  7. Verification:
    • After filling out the form and uploading the documents, a verification process will take place. The application will be sent to the GST officer for verification.
    • You may be required to provide additional information or documents if requested by the GST officer.
  8. GST Registration Certificate:
    • Once the application is approved, you will receive a GST registration certificate containing your GSTIN (GST Identification Number).
    • The certificate will be available for download on the GST portal.
  9. Start Filing Returns:
    • After obtaining GST registration, you can start filing GST returns based on your business turnover and the type of GST registration.
