Address Change in Aadhaar Card

Purpose:

Changing the address on your Aadhaar card is essential to ensure that your Aadhaar details are up to date and reflect your current place of residence. It is necessary for various purposes such as availing government subsidies, filing income tax returns, opening a bank account, applying for a passport, and other government-related services where Aadhaar is required as proof of identity and address.

Necessity:

  1. Government Services: Many government services require Aadhaar as proof of identity and address. An updated address ensures you can avail these services seamlessly.
  2. Financial Transactions: Banks and financial institutions often require Aadhaar for account opening, KYC (Know Your Customer) verification, and other financial transactions.
  3. Subsidies and Benefits: Aadhaar is linked to various subsidies and benefits provided by the government. An updated address ensures you receive these benefits without any disruptions.
  4. Identity Verification: Aadhaar is widely accepted as a valid proof of identity. An updated address ensures your Aadhaar card is valid and can be used for identity verification purposes.
  5. Legal Compliance: It is a legal requirement to keep your Aadhaar details updated to avoid any legal complications.

Steps to Change Address on Aadhaar Card:

  1. Visit the official UIDAI website: The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) is the government agency responsible for Aadhaar. You can visit their official website at https://uidai.gov.in/ Home – Unique Identification Authority of India | Government of India (uidai.gov.in).
  2. Navigate to the Aadhaar update section: On the UIDAI website, locate the “My Aadhaar” tab on the homepage. Under this tab, you’ll find the option to “Update Your Aadhaar”. Click on this option to proceed.
  3. Choose the online update option: Once you click on “Update Your Aadhaar”, you’ll be presented with various update options. Select “Update Aadhaar Details (Online)” to update your address online.
  4. Enter your Aadhaar number and captcha: On the next page, you’ll be asked to enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha code displayed on the screen. Fill in these details and click on “Send OTP” to receive a one-time password (OTP) on your registered mobile number.
  5. Receive and enter OTP: Check your registered mobile number for the OTP. Enter this OTP on the website and click on “Login” to proceed to the next step.
  6. Select the fields to update: Once logged in, you’ll be asked to select the fields you want to update. Since you want to change your address, select the address option.
  7. Enter the new address: A form will appear where you can enter your new address details. Make sure the address you enter matches the proof of address document you will upload in the next step. You can update both the address and the local language version of the address if applicable.
  8. Upload supporting document: You’ll be prompted to upload a scanned copy or photo of your proof of address document. Ensure that the document is clear and legible. Accepted documents include passport, bank statement, utility bill, etc. The document should clearly display your name and new address.
  9. Review and submit: Review the information you have entered and the document you have uploaded. Verify that all details are correct and then submit your update request.
  10. Note the URN: After submitting the request, a unique Update Request Number (URN) will be generated. Note down this number as it will be required for tracking the status of your update request.
  11. Verification and processing: UIDAI will verify the information provided by you and, if everything is in order, your address will be updated in the Aadhaar database. You will receive an acknowledgment receipt with a URN for tracking.
  12. Check status: You can check the status of your update request online by visiting the UIDAI website and using the URN you noted down earlier. You can also download the updated Aadhaar card once the update is processed.
